What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique observes how we use ourselves in every day living. In a class, we identify what we are already doing that may be interfering with our overall coordination and proper functioning. With the use of touch and verbal guidance, the teacher helps the student to become aware of unnecessary tension and invites them to experience more balance and ease of movement. In the process, we fine tune our self-awareness and re-discover what it feels like to move with freedom.
What are the benefits?
The Alexander Technique is an educational method that encourages curiosity, observation, and continuous learning. Each person will discover tools to help promote improved coordination and functioning throughout their ever-changing lives. Some benefits include:
- Less pain
- Better range of movement
- Improved balance
- Stress reduction
- Improved posture & spinal health
- Better breath and voice quality
- Better performance (sports, performing arts, public speaking, etc.)
- Improved presence, focus, and ability to listen
“The Alexander Technique gives me clarity at certain moments, and at others completely challenges everything I have believed to be true. At times, I am not sure what has happened, but I do know that something has modified and that I feel different, more at ease, and better organized. I feel solid and fluid at the same time. It makes me contemplate how my thoughts interact with my body and how my relationship to my surroundings influence my learning process.”
